RTI… What’s that?

What is RTI?

Have you heard students talking about RTI? What in the world are they talking about? Well, wonder no more.

Vinton-Shellsburg Middle School began looking into the national initiative last year as a way to personalize learning for all students. RTI stands for “Response to Intervention” and one benefit of the initiative is to help students who are struggling. “I think it has become more than that at our school. I think what RTI means at VSMS is “Really Teaching Individuals,” said Kris Howes-Vonstein.

VSMS has thirty minutes each day where students receive focused skill work, assistance with class work, or select personalize learnings. Each day teachers help students to schedule their RTI for the following day. For example, if a group of students missed most of the questions on a standardized test about finding the main idea, those students will be assigned to work with a language teacher on that particular skill for a couple of weeks. Sometimes students are assigned to work with a teacher if they need to make up lab activities or complete assigned work. If students don’t have an assigned commitment, they get to choose what they want to learn about during RTI.

Choosing what you want to do during RTI provides students with a way to personalize their learning. If a student enjoys science, he or she might choose Science Articles, Animals without Backbones, Mars Pathfinder, Science Topics, or Nature Walk. If a student wants to learn more about social studies, he or she might sign up for Mummies, Iowa and the Civil War, Map Skill games, Interesting Facts about the Statue of Liberty, etc. Some choices require a commitment for several days so that topics can be thoroughly discussed.

A general study hall, a smaller (quieter) study hall and “homework center” are also options during RTI. Many students who are in both band and choir never have an assigned study hall. These students appreciate the chance to choose study hall when they know they might need extra time to complete work or study for a test. Students also sometimes choose study hall if they know they will be participating in an after school activity that will interfere with homework completion. Homework Center provides extremely guided help in homework completion with a nearly one to one ratio of teachers to student. Students may choose Homework Center or be assigned by a teacher for special help.

Remediation, acceleration and high interest learning are a few of the goals of RTI time at VSMS. Ask any middle school student what they learned in RTI this week, and find out more!

Welcome to Shellsburg Elementary

PRINCIPAL’S WELCOME

My name is Ryan Davis and I am the principal of Shellsburg Elementary School in the Vinton-Shellsburg School District.  Having graduated from Vinton-Shellsburg in 1994, it is an honor to serve our district and communities.

I graduated from the University of Northern Iowa with a science teaching degree, and taught in Minnesota for several years.  I received my Masters Degree in Educational Leadership from Southwest State University, and then completed an Advanced Graduate Certificate in Education Administration from St. Mary’s University, after which I served as a 5-8 Principal.

When an opportunity presented itself in the Vinton-Shellsburg School District, I knew it was time to come back to my home school district and give back to the system that gave me so much.  I moved here with my wife Melanie (Vinton-Shellsburg Class of 96) and our four kids: Maggie, Abby, Hayden, and Nile.  Once a Viking, always a Viking.  I started in our District as High School Associate Principal.  I have also been the Principal of the Alternative School and the District At-Risk Coordinator.  I am thrilled to now have the opportunity to be Principal at Shellsburg Elementary.

Please feel free to visit our school.  Shellsburg Elementary has an outstanding staff that is committed to giving our students a first-class education.  We are here to serve our families and communities, and would welcome the opportunity to show you what we do.

1:1 Learning Environment

The Vinton-Shellsburg Community School District provides a 1:1 learning environment for students in grades 9-12. The laptop program began in the fall of 2013. Each student is provided with a MacBook computer that allows access to multiple online resources and applications. These opportunities engage students in 21st century learning. Look for current student projects posted on this web site.

What makes 1:1 learning successful at VSCSD? Infrastructure, Professional Development, Dedication. Infrastructure is key to a successful 1:1 learning environment. When students and staff face barriers using the internet, then the chance of full implementation is hindered. Therefore, time was spent looking for a reliable and dependable wireless network that provides access to students and staff daily.

Professional development is critical to providing teachers with the skills to teach with the resources currently available as well as those that will be available in the future. The Vinton-Shellsburg high school began the program with PD focused around technology pedagogy and tools. They participated in Apple Training in 2012 and have utilized their 2hr early outs to learn more about how technology can impact their classroom. Staff are encouraged to be risk-takers and further develop their style of teaching by attending and presenting at conferences/workshops. Staff have attended numerous conferences, taken technology integration classes and have studied the SAMR model together to improve their teaching and learning.

Dedication is seen through all stakeholders. The staff have spent numerous hours of their own personal time to educate themselves on how to fully utilize the laptop within their instruction. The students have embraced the responsibility of a laptop and value the learning provided them. Families and community members support the learning environment through time spent with students and staff learning how education is changing even in a rural community in Iowa.
