To Families of School Age Children in Need of Summer Food Assistance:

The local food pantries want you to know that food is available to help children who receive free and reduced price lunches and breakfast during the school year. You may access this help at either of our locations.

Those who live south of Benton County E44 (the road from Elberon to Atkins) are encouraged to use the Belle Plaine Pantry. It is open on Tuesday afternoons from 1:30-4:00 and is located south of the Lincoln Cafe on 8th Ave.

Those living north of E44 should use the Vinton Pantry which is located behind the Social Services Office at 303 1st Ave. This is the Governor Sherman Building across from the west side of the County Court House. Patrons may register with the Social Services office on Tuesday or Friday and a volunteer will be called to serve them.

Neither pantry has a telephone. It will be necessary for you to come to one of the locations.

We hope that together we can help keep our children healthy during the school break.

Each year students/parents are required to update the forms required to participate in athletics at VS. This year there will be NO FORMS SENT HOME. Parents will be required to print the physical forms from our website and return them to the HS or MS office before students will be allowed to practice in the fall. The required forms are at the link below and will be on our homepage as well. Dental forms for 9th graders are also required.

Even if your child does not participate in a Fall activity, it is best to get them done sooner rather than later.

DO NOT RETURN THEM TO COACHES- Deliver only the Physical and Dental forms to the HS, MS, or Central Offices. The rest of the forms are just notice…. that information will be collected via the eRegistration process starting in mid July.

All (Physicals) SPORTS FORMS ARE DUE AUGUST 1 for Fall Sports.

Today the kindergarten and 4th grade students at Shellsburg Elementary enjoyed a combined library class in order to read and create digital stories together. 4th grade students have been working several weeks on a site called storybird.com to create their own original picture books using collections of illustrations created by various artists.  They shared these stories today with their kindergarten reading buddies, and then helped  the kindergartners create their own online picture book.  Links to some of their creations are below:

What happens when a group of eighth-graders is left to produce “Romeo and Juliet” on their own?

The funny answer to that question is the topic of the play “Romeo and Juliet: Together (And Alive) at Last.” Vinton-Shellsburg Middle School students will perform the play at 7 p.m. this Friday, March 22, in the Tilford Elementary Auditorium.

The story

Pete (Charley Cooling) and Anabell (Lindsey Miller) have bashfully told friends that they like each other, but are too shy to speak, or even look at each other. To remedy this, their friends Ed (Cole Nielson), Priscilla (Olivia Coder) and Radosh (Sarah Schminke) decide that the best way to get them to talk is to cast them as Romeo and Juliet in a school play.

The principal (Bailey Bruce) and teachers (Riley Davis and Claire Smith) grant the students permission to produce the play. But throughout the production process, a variety of things go wrong. Cast members get sick, props do not function as planned, and the student who wanted to play Romeo (Jacob Worthen as Albert Hamilton) tries to sabotage the show.

Other cast members include: Casey Funk, Lauren Price, Grace Horst, Hannah Kimm, TaiLynn Tharp, Effie Hutchinson, Kristina Kirk, Madyson Rule, Matt Kimm, Libbie Timmerman, Morgan White, Erin Cox, Becca Barker, Dylan Christy, Cassie Hazen, Breanna Uthoff, Sam Kintzel, Alissa Hendryx and Alyssa Clark.

Student directors are Jay Young and Erin Cox. Crew members include: Keith Henkle, Jordan Cantrell, Jay Young, Kristina Kirk, Hannah Kimm, TaiLynn Tharp, Breanna Uthoff, Dylan Christy, Jordan Schoettmer, Maddie Earhardt, Taylor Spies, Cassie Hazen and Brianna Lundvall. Baylee Bruce worked on the choreography.

Crystal Coder is directing the show, with the help of backstage supervisors Lisa Kirk, Sonja Kimm, Annie Kimm, Sherry Wilmot and Karrie Bartling.

Snow days this year have complicated schedules for
many people, including the Vinton-Shellsburg third grade
classes. Third graders were supposed to go to the Englert
Theatre in Iowa City on Wednesday, February 27 to see a
health and wellness show performed by Slim Goodbody.
Instead, they had a snow day. Rather than disappointing
the students by having to miss the field trip entirely, Slim
Goodbody agreed to perform his show at the Tilford
Auditorium on Friday, March 1. Students from Tilford and Shellsburg were educated and
entertained as they engaged in original songs, dance, and
movement activities. Audience participation was a large
part of the show as Slim picked students out of the crowd to
demonstrate how muscles move, how the diaphragm works,
and the importance of never smoking. Students learned the
fundamentals of anatomy, nutrition, fitness and personal
hygiene, as well as self-respect and motivation to be the
best they can be.
