Help the Vinton-Shellsburg Community School District celebrate Attendance Awareness Month during September.
“We are focused on improving attendance by working with students and their families to reduce barriers to attendance because despite how talented our teaching staff is, they can’t teach kids who aren’t in school,” says Superintendent Mary Jo Hainstock.
How important is good attendance in getting a great education? Students who miss between two and four days of school in September are much more likely to miss an entire month of school by the end of the year, and attendance in 9th grade is a better predictor of a student graduating than their test scores in 8th grade. Even preschool and kindergarten is important because children with good attendance are more likely to be proficient readers by third grade.
