Best Wishes to our 2020 Retirees

Mark Dulin

Mark Dulin has driven many miles in the last 35 years as a VSCSD bus driver. He says the time has flown by because he’s had the opportunity to work with so many great people.

From students and parents to staff members and the rest of the transportation team, Mark has nothing but high regard for those he has encountered over the years. He is most appreciative of the team atmosphere that is VSCSD.

“Everyone works toward the same goal. We all work as a team for the good of all the students. That made my job easy,” he said. The unexpected end of the school year caught Mark off guard, as it did for so many. “I thought we’d be out of school for just a couple of weeks and then be right back. I had no idea it the school year would end that way.”

Mark is undecided in his plans after retirement, but he’s definitely looking forward to spending more time with his family.

Deb Schirm

Deb Schirm brought a great deal of experience with her when she started at VSCSD almost 21-1/2 years ago as a principal’s office secretary and health professional. She had been a nurse in Waterloo, had worked in a local dentist’s office, and coached AAU basketball teams for fun.

Now she is looking forward to spending more time with her husband on the farm, joking that she might even learn how to drive a tractor. She plans to enjoy: her girls and their families; time with her mom and friends; lake house, and taking time for self-care.

Deb says she’ll miss building relationships with staff, students, and parents. She loved watching the students grow as individuals over their four years at the high school. Deb kept a treat basket ready for the many students who came into the office to talk with her, often during lunch break. It’s a tradition she hopes others will continue. She also held onto every thank you note she received from students who graduated. “I have kept them all. Then there’s my wall of senior photos that I have kept next to me at my desk. I could always look at them over the years with fond memories.”

Thank You, Difference Makers!

We would like to wish a happy retirement and send a huge thank you to all of our VSCSD retirees, including; Mike Dulin, Deb Garbers, Susan Kakac, Rose Kern, Deb Schirm, and Gib Ziemer for everything they did to better the district and the students and families we serve. We’d like to express our gratitude to each of you for your respective careers in the district and wish you the best of luck in your plans for this next phase of life.
