The Iowa School Tax Notification is a state-required notice sent to property owners and posted by school districts to increase transparency about proposed property taxes.

This requirement was created by the Iowa Legislature and is administered through the Iowa Department of Management.

📬 What the notification is

Each spring, property owners receive a “Proposed Property Tax Notice” in the mail. This notice shows the maximum property tax amounts that local governments could levy, including:

  • School districts

  • Cities

  • Counties

It is not a tax bill. Instead, it shows proposed levies before budgets are finalized.

🏫 What it means for school districts

School districts must:

  1. Publish the proposed property tax levy

  2. Hold a public hearing where residents can comment

  3. Approve the levy after the hearing

  4. Later approve the final district budget

The notice lists the current year tax levy and the proposed levy for the upcoming fiscal year so taxpayers can see any changes.

⚠️ Why the notice sometimes causes confusion

The number shown is often the maximum allowable levy, not necessarily the final amount collected.
For many districts, the actual taxes paid may not change significantly, even if the notice shows a higher proposed levy.
